MICROGREENS: TINY BUT MIGHTY BENEFITS

Chronic disease is a major health problem on the rise in our current society and living in this fast paced world increases the need for smarter choices to maintain a well-balanced nutritious diet. For this reason, it is a good idea to be seeking nutrient dense, energy packed, functional superfoods. One of nature’s hidden superfoods, readily available and easily accessible are organic microgreens.

Microgreens are essentially the young leaves of vegetables, herbs and grains. Due to their compact size they are highly concentrated in both taste and nutrients. Some of the microgreen varieties such as broccoli, radish and cabbage have been shown to contain at least five times more and up to forty times the nutrient content of the mature plant. One study concluded there were higher levels of vitamins A, B6, C, E, K, carotenoids and amino acids in these highly antioxidant greens. Different microgreens provide highly varying amounts of nutrients and minerals including macro and trace minerals, therefore including a mixture into your diet such as broccoli, kale, radish, cabbage (brassica), sunflower or snow pea and many more can supply a good portion of your recommended daily requirements.

Due to their high bioactive compounds, they may be beneficial for chronic disease prevention such as cancer and cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases by reducing inflammation, oxidative stress and its consequent damage, as well as modulating the lipid profile. Their high fat soluble vitamin content (A, E, K) makes them valuable to support an array of systems including eye, skin, bone and teeth, kidney, cardiovascular, fertility and cell health. Vitamin C is heavily involved in many metabolic functions including immune system function, hormones, neurotransmitter, collagen and carnitine synthesis. Not to mention reducing histamine release and supporting heavy metal metabolism.

Naturally detoxifying, the brassica microgreens contain higher amounts of glucoraphanin, a precursor to sulforaphane. Sulforaphane is a potent inducer of phase II liver detoxification, which is essential to eliminate harmful metabolites and reduce toxicity in the body. It also acts to eliminate excess estrogens from the body. Symptoms may include heavy menstruation, premenstrual anxiety or depression, pain and cramping, headaches/migraines, insomnia and fluid retention to name a few. Therefore, including brassicaceae microgreens in the diet is one of the best options to support hormone balance.

Not only are they functional foods containing many phytonutrients, they are easily digested and pack a punch full of distinctive flavours. Best eaten raw after gently washing, take the time to enjoy the succulent delicate textures. They are an ideal way to consume plant food without having to eat bucket loads of vegetables. Microgreens can be used as a flavour enhancer or incorporated into a variety of meals such as wraps, sandwiches and salads. They are great added to smoothies or simply add to the side of the plate of any meal. Be sure to give these a try and include a handful with your daily meals to reap the multi benefits.
