WHY WE LOVE MUNGALLI
MORE THAN JUST COWS & MILK
August 21st, 2025
At Market Organics, we’re all about supporting family-owned, community-driven businesses that are dedicated to sustainability, integrity, and health. We’re not just about selling organic, wholefoods; we carefully choose brands that share our commitment to nurturing the planet and producing high-quality products. That’s why we’re proud to partner with Mungalli Biodynamic Dairy - a farm that’s doing things a little differently, and for all the right reasons.
Mungalli Biodynamic Dairy isn’t just about producing delicious dairy; it’s about creating a thriving, sustainable ecosystem. As a biodynamic farm, Mungalli works in harmony with nature to create a farm that isn’t just a place to grow food, but a living organism that nurtures the land, animals, and people. This holistic approach to farming is exactly why we choose to support them at Market Organics. We want to ensure that the products we offer are not only good for you but good for the planet as well.
Mungalli’s story began more than 30 years ago when brothers Rob and Danny Watson took over the family farm. At the time, the farm was conventionally managed, but Rob and Danny quickly realised that the use of fertilisers and pesticides just didn’t feel right. They decided to make a bold change, much to their father’s dismay - no more chemicals, no more fertilisers, and no more pesticides. Just organic farming, the way nature intended.
But that wasn’t the end of their journey. After discovering biodynamics, Rob and Danny took things a step further. Biodynamic farming is more than organic; it’s about aligning with nature’s rhythms and treating the farm as a living organism. It’s a deeper, more holistic approach that connects the soil, plants, animals, and people in a balanced, sustainable way. It was the perfect fit for their vision, and they’ve been working with it ever since.
Mungalli is so much more than just a dairy farm. Located in the heart of tropical Queensland, surrounded by World Heritage-listed rainforest, Mungalli is an oasis of biodiversity. The farm is home to wallabies, cassowaries and a wide variety of birds.
Rob, Danny, and their family have also taken steps to improve the land itself, planting rainforest and creating wetlands to foster a healthier ecosystem. This commitment to regenerative farming is what sets Mungalli apart. It’s not just about producing high-quality dairy; it’s about caring for the land, animals, and wildlife, so the farm can continue to thrive for generations to come. Biodynamics isn’t just a trendy farming term - it’s a comprehensive farming philosophy that goes beyond organic practices. It incorporates elements like lunar cycles, special preparations to enhance soil health, and a deep respect for the interconnectedness of all living things. By adopting this approach, Mungalli creates a self-sustaining system where the farm isn’t just surviving, it’s flourishing.
For Mungalli, it’s all about maintaining a balance between the farm and its environment. Healthier soil leads to healthier crops and animals, and that translates into better dairy for us all. It’s the kind of farming that’s good for people, animals, and the planet. The Watson family walk their talk and have been practicing this Biodynamic method of regenerative farming for nearly 40 years, long before it was trendy.
One of the core values of Mungalli is ensuring their cows are treated with the utmost respect. As Farmer Rob says...
“Mungalli cows are 100% grass fed on organic mountain pastures as nature intended. There are no grains, genetically modified protein supplements, antimicrobials or other nasties used to push the cows beyond their natural limits. Because of this, our cows may produce less milk, but we feel they’re happier and that it is much more healthy.”
What really makes Mungalli special is their long-term commitment to sustainability. Rob and Danny, along with Rob’s partner Michelle and his son Alex, who also work on the farm, are focused on leaving the land better than they found it.
They’re passionate about ensuring this beautiful part of Queensland remains pristine and productive for future generations. They’re farming with a purpose: to regenerate the land and create a positive impact on the environment.
