Perimenopause: Understanding the Changes and How Food Can Help

Have you found yourself feeling exhausted for no obvious reason, struggling to sleep, forgetting simple things, or wondering why your body suddenly feels so different?

If you’re in your late 30s to early 50s, you may be experiencing perimenopause, the natural transition leading up to menopause. While it’s a normal stage of life, that doesn’t mean you have to simply ‘put up with’ the symptoms.

Perimenopause is driven by natural fluctuations in the hormone’s estrogen and progesterone. These hormones influence more than your menstrual cycle, they also affect your mood, sleep, energy, metabolism, brain function and digestive health. As hormone levels fluctuate, many women experience symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, anxiety, irritability, poor sleep, bloating, weight gain, irregular periods and hot flushes.

I like to think of perimenopause as a golden window of opportunity. Rather than seeing it as the beginning of decline, it’s a chance to pause, reassess your health, and make positive changes that can support you well into menopause and beyond. The habits you build during this transition from the foods you eat to how you manage stress, sleep and movement can have a lasting impact on your future health, energy and quality of life.

The good news is that while we can’t stop the hormonal changes of perimenopause, we can support our bodies through them. Food plays an important role in hormone health by providing the nutrients your body needs to function at its best.

A diet rich in quality protein, colourful vegetables, healthy fats, wholegrains, legumes, nuts and seeds helps support energy, muscle health, blood sugar balance and overall wellbeing.

Fibre is particularly important during perimenopause as it supports gut health and helps your body eliminate excess estrogen through the bowel. Healthy fats provide the building blocks for hormone production, while protein helps maintain muscle mass and keeps you feeling fuller for longer.

Certain foods can also provide nutrients and plant compounds that support healthy hormone function. Foods such as extra virgin olive oil, flaxseeds or flaxseed oil, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, green peas, broccoli and strawberries contain healthy fats, fibre and antioxidants that support overall wellbeing and healthy oestrogen metabolism.

Foods including sweet potato, pumpkin, bananas, black beans and oranges provide nutrients such as vitamin B6, vitamin C, magnesium and complex carbohydrates, which are important for normal hormone production, including progesterone, nervous system function and energy metabolism.

It’s also important to remember that no two women experience perimenopause the same way. Symptoms can be influenced not only by hormonal changes but also by gut health, nutrient deficiencies, chronic stress, inflammation, sleep quality and other lifestyle factors.

That’s why a personalised approach is often more effective than following the latest diet trend or relying on social media advice.

A Simple Tip You Can Start Today

Instead of asking ‘what should I cut out?’ start asking, ‘what can I add to nourish my body?’. At each main meal, aim to include:

  • A quality source of protein

  • Plenty of colourful vegetables

  • A high fibre carbohydrate ( Natures carbs)

  • Healthy fats such as olive oil, nuts or seeds
