LETS TALK ABOUT OUR

IMMUNE SYSTEM

WITH ABBY DALE

Autumn brings cooler mornings, appetite changes, slight energy dips as the body prepares for the demands of winter. From a naturopathic perspective, this transition period is one of the most important times to support immunity by building strong foundations before winter truly arrives.

Immunity isn’t something we just switch on when we feel run down, it’s the result of daily inputs over time like how well we digest and absorb nutrients, how rested the nervous system feels, how supported the gut and liver are and how much space the body has to repair and regulate itself.

The gut plays a huge part in our immune health, as a huge majority of immune activity occurs along the gut lining. One of the first places we look is digestion. In the cooler months, the body generally prefers warmth and regularity.

“Warm, cooked meals are often easier for our bodies to digest and more nourishing than cold or raw foods”

Soups, stews, slow-cooked vegetables, bone broths and adding warming spices to our meals can help support digestive strength which also supports immune resilience.

Sleep and nervous system health are also deeply connected to our immunity. Chronic stress, long-term fatigue and poor sleep place a significant burden on our immune function. By prioritising earlier nights, reducing overstimulation in the evenings and creating grounding routines that allow our bodies to feel safe will support out nervous system.

Herbal medicine can be a wonderful ally during autumn. Herbs that are traditionally used to support immunity, stress and recovery can be powerful supports to our bodies.

Immunity isn’t just about fighting illness as it occurs; a healthy immune system is responsive, intelligent and adaptable. It knows when to activate and protect, and just as importantly, when to stand down and restore balance. Rather than something we “switch on” only when we’re unwell, immunity is something we cultivate over time through consistent nourishment, adequate rest, natural rhythms and gentle, ongoing support.

If you find yourself feeling run down as the weather becomes cooler, catching endless bugs, or struggling with low energy, this may be a sign that your foundations need some attention. Working with a qualified naturopath can help to uncover what your body is asking for, identify areas of imbalance and create a personalised, sustainable approach to strengthening and supporting your immune health.
